A pious Jew called Jesus, who lived in the middle of the 1st century of the Christian Era, went round Jerusalem, predicting its destruction. He was arrested by the Temple priests and severely flogged. When he persisted, he was brought before the Roman Governor, and again was scourged to the bone; but when he said nothing except to repeat his dire warning, “Woe to the city, and to the people, and to the temple,” the governor pronounced him mad, and had him released.
