Cicero, not a man called to military pursuits, accumulated a great fortune in the 60s BC, as a lawyer and investor. In Rome, this was a great time for such men. Easy, profitable military campaigns in the East and peaceful, just as profitable, trade in the West made large fortunes for intermediaries and those with wealth to lend for risky pursuits, such as Caesar’s revenge campaign against his piratical acquaintances.
