In 74 BC, strongman Huo Guang personally picked the successor of Emperor Zhao after Emperor Wu’s preferred son died at the age of twenty-one (perhaps not of poisoning). Huo was so powerful that he was able to change his mind and depose his selected candidate after just one month on the throne; and replaced him with another more to his liking, Emperor Xuan, who was eighteen at the time.
