That India’s first dominant, centralized state, the Maurya Empire, was founded the year after Alexander’s death in Babylon wasn’t a complete coincidence. Many statelets in the Gangetic Plain had fought for dominance for some time, but they lacked for long an external enemy that focused their energies on a common goal.
