By 403 BC, the division of the formerly northern Chinese powerhouse of Jin had been institutionalized, and three smaller states arose, from south to north: Han, Wei and Zhao. Formal partition improved ties between the rulers of each, and they briefly allied against common enemies, before they went back to their old custom of recrimination and back-stabbing.
