Unlike earlier (and later) empires such as those of Egypt, Hatti and Persia, all of the Roman-controlled territories as of 29 BC, and most of those in later centuries, were within relatively short distance of a Mediterranean sea port: this made seaborne transportation, which even in the 21st century is much cheaper than transportation by road, a highly convenient method of moving goods around, from one side of the Mediterranean to the other.
