Every morning I tell I’m going to ignore my emails and get right to work but every morning something catches my eye and pulls me in. This morning it’s your article on esoteric philosophy and the ideology of progress. I have been fascinated by the distinction between esoteric and exoteric philosophy since reading Strauss’s “Persecution and the Art of Writing” thirty years ago (many times). I practice Tai Chi daily and the masters definitely practiced esoteric techniques to hand down their teachings in seemingly plain sight. Your article is a stimulating update and makes me want to read your and Melzer’s books.

Confession, aspiration: This is precisely what I strive for: “something you can explain in five minutes to a twelve-year-old.”

Good post, though I would note that Pascal Bruckner is a massive exception to your thesis.

Not so much an exception, but a French philosopher who has been pretty able to stay within the political center, so always pretty safe from cancellation.

Poland vs Bavaria: TWO POPES, 🔔📚✍🏼🇻🇦 has anyone else found that the dense writings Karol Woytila of Poland are far more challenging than the professor from Bavaria, Joseph Ratzinger? Your "hook" 😉🎣 concerning esoteric continental 🌍 philo-sophia🪔 got me on this. Both 🇦🇹 FA Hayek and JP-II’s ⚜️ writing styles are really challenging, while 💱 Ludwig von Mises and ⛪ Benedict XVI's are simply more accessible, even if the topics are similar. 🤔 Perhaps, the former write ✝️ for scholars, churchmen and economists, and the latter 👨🏼‍🏫 for students, the laity and the masses....

.....grace and peace to you Amigo. Onward through the fog!

The shallowest discussion of the “ esoteric” I have ever read. The equivalent of analysis of the ocean based on the water in an egg cup. You embarrass yourself.
